Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), who owns a nightclub in Casablanca, discovers his old flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is in town with her husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). Laszlo is a famed rebel, and with Germans on his tail, Ilsa knows Rick can help them get out of the country.






characters:
rick  - rick is the protagonist of Casablanca, he once lived in New York but left for an apparent unknown reason. he plays an anti fascist role taking part in illegal activities for example running illegal weaponry to Ethiopia.When we first meet Rick, he is a bar owner in Casablanca who wears a sombre( dour) expression as he drinks and plays chess aloneHe consistently expresses his freedom from all bonds, wether they may be political or personal. After Ilsa enters the picture, he goes through a substantial  change. In a flashback, we witness Rick in Paris the city of love. He is in love with Ilsa and appears very happy, and he is shattered when she doesn't show up at the train station. Rick never goes back to the romantic lover he was in Paris, but he does overcome his doubt and indifferences in become an independent  idealist, committed to helping the Allies cause in World War II.

ilsa -  
a beauty from Norway  who is Victor Laszlo's wife and Rick's ex lover. A  very faithful  wife, Ilsa refuses an exit visa when Laszlo is unable to seek one as well, proclaiming. she would rather wait for her husband and leave Casablanca with one another. In Paris, Ilsa had fallen in love with our protagonist Rick, because at the time she had thought o be lead that her husband Lazlo was dead. when she learnt of the news she had received she sent a shattering note to rick saying they could never be with one another gain. Despite her loyal commitment to her husband and her  secret confessions of love to rick in Paris and later to happen Casablanca in his cafe, she shy's away from showing any empathy and passion. the letter may be the best look into ilsa background and personality . she is so cold and quiet that it is nearly impossible to grasp onto who she really is as the Norwegian girl we meet in Paris.

captain Renault-
captain renault is the leading officer for police in Casablanca Morocco. Renault is a character that serves and represents , does not care for right or wrong situations and situates himself with the winning side. Louis is a blatant hypocrite reprimanding  rick for allowing gambling in his bar yet he pockets his money for the evenings. although despite all of this self serving selfish behaviour Louis and rick appear o be good friends  and shows signs of being a decent person although his personality may not seem all that otherwise.

victor- Laszlo is the most basic character to understand. he is portrayed as a sort of hero , with a pure heart seen as a good man . Laszlo Is handsome , self assured  ,visionary , direct , resolved and whole hearted . he is married to his pretty and attractive ills , and has the most love for his wife even so that when he found out of ilsa affair took it upon himself as the mature husband and set aside the incident saying that he understands. he as the ultimate husband will do everything in his power to sacrifice himself so Lisa can escape safely from casablanca.  he has a very assertive love for his politics. he has a desire to beat the nazis in the war which is the explanation as to where his motivation for his actions come from. he portrays the resistance in www2 has he is very dangerous for the nazis.
