Film studies : my favourite films (with review)

The darkest minds is a phenomenal film exploring strange mutant powers given to kids out of nowhere. The film follows the life of ruby daly(Amandla stenberg) a 16 year old girl with the second most dangerous power of mind reading and manipulation. The film itself jumps around a lot between films the hunger games x men and divergent exploring the lives of young teens and the power of adults against them. This draws me in as a massive thriller , sci fi action and adventure fan as it not only explores the powers these kids have but how they are able to cope with it on daily basis using it to their advantage. The diversity in the film is incredible as we see a lot of multicultural actors starring like co stars skylan brooks and Miya cech of black and asian descent , Jennifer also of asian decent really understands how to make a film more realistic based on cultural factors as-well. the film is set in America where dozens of cultures are based so she really understood how to bring everything in to plan.  The film to the audience gives an outlook of how the world could possibly be if we lived in this fantasy world. all the key aspects in the film ( mise en scene , cinematography etc) is portrayed so nicely giving the best of everything , in one scene ruby decides to wear a red dress which symbolises love which she may have for her on screen lover Liam (harris Dickinson). the range of close shots in the film show so much expression on the characters face giving the audience a heartfelt feeling of emotions for the characters when going through a rough and tough time.

Image result for the darkest minds scale chartImage result for the darkest minds scenescostumes play a big role in this film as in the start it symbolised the roles many hundreds of kids casted played. the audience are able to separate what thew storyline considers good and bad kids on a scale of green to red. the film helps to easily understand the difference between everyone , green being smart kids , blue having telekinesis yellow for electricity orange for mind control and red for pyrokinesis ( fire).  the costumes separate all the effected kids , it also uses a good. use of colour as it relates to the power itself , red being fire and yellow being electricity and green being for smartness etc.this is important as it really gives the audience an insight into who is who . The meaning behind the film follows ruby who cannot find her voice being a really powerful mutant in a post apocalyptic world. the film isa teen sci-fi fantasy and it really appeals to the teenager generation and fantasy film fans because the edits and animations are proved to be really realistic making the audience more captivated by what's going on in the film. moreover the narrative of the story line follows a clear structure with clear understanding of what's going on and when its happening. the film is a sequel following 3more stories after this however they have not been made or realised so it would be very interesting to see how director
Jennifer Yu
Nelson brings the film further in an already great film  production.

Image result for the darkest minds camp dance sceneone scene which made my favourite in the film is the camp dance scene.  the use of many characters else the audience to understand that even though the world had been struck with a mutant disease it shows how they can also have a life outside of the world they are being locked away from. the use if dark lighting and a medium shot on Liam with a happy facial expression shows how they are still able to enjoy themselves. we are also introduced to the rebellion formed by the kids shows how they have formed a rebellion which makes the audience realise that kids are not as vulnerable as they had been before. the film does all of this by using emotion and setting to create a good scene.

The films use of sound is amazing completely hitting each scenes with the realism they deserve. in the scene like riding a bike the cast come in contact with a country hunter lady Jane (Gwendoline Christie ( game of thrones star)) who tries to run them off the road in her sports car. the sounds of the cars engine emphasises the speed of the car and the crashing sound emphasises the impact of the crashes and lady janes intentions of capturing or killing the mutant teens.

overall I would rate the film a 5* because it really gives you everything that you would expect in an action adventure thriller and sci-fi film. the conventions are spot and and no mistakes are made in bringing to life this fantasy world.
