ricks cafe scene analysis.

The presented shot is used at the start to show the outside of Rick’s Café.all of the lighting in the shot is very dark and many and this is supported by the backgrounds shadow implicating that the scene is dark scene..This dark lighting helps bring attention to the sign that says ‘Rick’s Café American  as the sign is very bright which stands out among everything in the shot.  the brightness of the sign may identify a safe haven for the people living in Casablanca. they might also see this as a safe haven as people know rick is the guy to help them get ahold of a visa to leave the country. the sign we see features his name which gives audience the information that the main character rick own this cafe . in the shot we can slightly see double doors which represents a barrier between inside and outside. we also witness a bright light , sort of like a search light which may imply that the people living in Casablanca are constantly under surveillance meaning where they are may not be a safe place and maybe that everyone cannot be trusted. Then there is a close up of the sign to bring out attention back to ricks cafe letting us know that this scene will be about rick. After this close up shot, the camera does a tilt movement to show us the doors to the café and then begins to move into the café.

the camera builds up an intriguing story line as we are slowly introduced to rick , firstly we have the camera taking us around the cafe ( dolly/tracking) which also gives us information from other actors in the scene as we here the word wait/waiting a a lot which implies that any people in and around the cafe are waiting for visas so than escape the hells of Casablanca. the movements are really impressive at the Time this was really hard to produce. as we follow the camera through the cafe we get to see lots of different. elements of mis en. scene for example the decor implies that the place is very fancy and people go there a lot. we see a-lot of diegetic music performed in the scene which implies again that the place is really fancy and also that the place is nice to come and chill and relax at. this scene longs out the introduction to rick however it gives us background details of his personality. inside of the cafe there are many bright lights which are reflected by the multiple chandeliers in the room.this reflects the wealth and lets us. know. that this is no ordinary hangout for people with no money bt a place for the wealthy seeking help to escape Casablanca. the lighting in the room reflects a lot of shadows which portrays a mystery in the setting which may be the introduction of rick  gambling is also featured in the scene which again reflects. the wealthy people coming into ricks cafe. majority of the people inside the cafe are smoking and drinking which lets us know that this is not a place for kids. there is a pattern across all people insides facial expressions presenting a feeling of nervousness stress and upset. sam and his staff in the cafe are the only people with a happy fiscal expression as this may imply that they are thro only people actually making money.

we are finally introduced to rick after a long delay of getting to now the background and the setting. this makes us happy as we have wanted to see who rick is and what he looks like and see what personality comes out of him which implies the mystery which we get from the lighting and the shadows. we are introduced to rick finally he we know will be playing an important role in Casablanca  we first see him playing chess on his own which implies one of two things , that he has no one to play with or he likes being by himself which gives us even more of a mystery. chess is a hard game to play which requires a lot of strategy and skill which implies that rick is smart. he appears more superior than everyone else as no one is invading his privacy. we get to knows as a women asked a waiter to get rick so they can drink however she is informed that rick does not drink with his customers. rick also drinks and smokes like all the other people we see in his bar which may imply that they may all be in the same boat.We know all of this before we even see Rick’s face which shows just how great of an effect the mise-en-scene has. The first shot of Rick is a medium-close up shot of his face. At this point, Rick hasn’t even done anything or spoken yet but he is already the most interesting character in the film.
